Family Ski Guide

CORONET PEAK

Planning a family ski holiday in Queenstown? You’re in the right place. Our Family Ski Guide is your go-to for making a day at Coronet Peak feel easy, fun, and full of Good Times.

Just 20 minutes from town with wide, forgiving runs, easy access, and a layout that works for families. We're all about less stress and more magic.

From toddlers to teens, there’s something here for every age and ability. Kids aged 5 and under ski free, and our Early Learning Centre, Skiwiland, sets the scene for confident first turns from age 3 - 5, and our progressive terrain helps little legends level up fast.

Plan Ahead

A little planning goes a long way

Whether it’s your first time up the hill or you’ve got a crew of little legends in tow, these simple tips will help set your family up for a great day.

Sort the Night Before - Pack your gear the night before and lay it all out - boots, gloves, goggles, the lot. Line it up in the order the kids will put it on, and you’ll thank yourself in the morning. It’s also the perfect moment to check nothing’s missing.

Check the Snow Report - Updated daily from 6:30am. It’s your go-to for road conditions, lift status, what the weather’s doing and what's happening on the mountain.

Arrive Early - The early bird gets the closest car park (or the front seats on the Ski Bus from Queenstown). Give yourself plenty of time and keep the stress levels low.

top tips

Agree meeting times and locations:
Pick an easy to find location on the deck or inside the base building as your meeting point. Handy if you’re splitting up for lessons and regrouping for lunch.

Take regular breaks:
Fatigue can creep up on you when the vibes are good! It helps the day run smooth and everyone make it to the end with smiles if you schedule regular breaks. Loosen up the ski boots, grab a hot choccy and a bite to eat before heading out again.

Pro tip: Make sure the kids have plenty of snacks in their pockets to keep their energy high!

Keep it flexible
Kids’ energy can change with the weather. Be ready to pivot - whether that’s an early lunch or swap the skis for a sled.

What to wear

Family Ski Gear Checklist

The right gear makes all the difference between a good day and a great one. Whether you’re here for your very first lesson or just tagging along for the snowball fights, here’s how to layer up, gear up.

Waterproof outerwear
Rentals Available
A snow jacket and pants are a must. These keep out moisture and wind, even if you fall over (which happens to everyone!). Regular rain jackets or jeans won’t cut it – they’ll soak through quickly.
Base layers (Thermals)
Must bring or purchase
These are your next-to-skin layers that trap warmth. Merino or synthetic materials are best. Avoid cotton – it holds moisture and will make you cold.
Mid-Layer (Optional)
Must bring or purchase
A fleece or light puffer for extra warmth between your thermals and jacket. You can always take it off if you get too hot.
helmets
Rentals Available
Safety first. Helmets are included in all gear rental packages and are way warmer than you’d expect!
Goggles or Sunglasses
Must bring or purchase
Goggles are best for visibility in snow or wind, but sunglasses can work on bluebird days. Make sure they’re also attached to their helmet. Nice and snug but not too tight. It's all about comfort here.
gloves & Socks
Must bring or purchase
Make sure to bring gloves & socks that fit nice and snug. Pro tip: It’s always good to have a second pair just in case they get wet/lost.

A few extras worth packing

be prepared for a full mountain day

A little preparation goes a long way. Pack snacks to keep your energy up, bring a refillable drink bottle, and don't forget your sunscreen - the alpine sun is strong. Extra layers or spare gloves are always a good idea too, so your ready for whatever the mountain throws at you.

Top Tip:
Practice at home first

Getting geared up can feel overwhelming for kids. A few dress rehearsals at home can make all the difference. It’s also a great chance to chat about what to expect on the mountain.

How do I get to Coronet Peak?

Coronet Peak is just 16km from central Queenstown and is accessed via a fully sealed alpine road. You can either drive yourself or take our daily Ski Bus from town, which is a great option if you prefer not to drive.

If you're driving, snow chains must be carried at all times, regardless of the weather in town. Chain use is often required after fresh snowfall or icy conditions. We recommend doing a practice fit before you need them. For real-time road conditions and chain updates, always check our Daily Snow Report before heading up.

How to stay safe on the mountain

A great ski day starts with knowing your limits, following mountain signage and taking your time while learning. Stay in control, give others space, and always stop in visible areas. If you’re unsure where to start, a lesson is the best way to build confidence safely. Check out our Mountain Safety Guide for more tips & tricks to keep your ski day safe & fun.

Six tips for chairlift loading for kids

Wait your turn

  • Line up in the lift queue and wait your turn before sliding forward to the chair loading zone.

Load with an experienced adult

  1. If you are over 120cm tall you can ride the lift by yourself.
  2. If you are under 120cm you must ride the lift with an adult
  3. If you are riding the chairlift with a friend, get your adult to sit between you both to help you on and off.
  4. Only you and one friend can ride with one adult, if you have lots of friends in your group, other adults will be asked to help.

Sit back-to-back

  • Sit all the way to the back of the chairlift so your back is touching the back rest.

Put the safety bar down

  • If you are tall enough you can pull the safety bar down, but if you can’t reach it let the adult put it down for you.

Sit still and hold on

  • Once you are on the chair and the safety bar is down, sit still and hold on until you are up the top of the mountain.

Let the adult raise the bar and tell you when to slide off

  • When you reach the top of the mountain, don’t rush to get off. Wait until you can touch the ground then slide off and enjoy your day.
